Question: What is my email username?
What is my username to login to the mail server via POP3, SMTP, webmail, or web administration?

    Solution:

Our mail server application takes a rather unique approach to user management. Instead of the usual "username" or "username@domain.tld", Lupinia's mail server uses "username@Postoffice", where "Postoffice" is an arbitrary name assigned to a group of users and domains. Due to the arbitrary nature of these post office names, they are all listed in this article. All systems in the email system use the same username scheme.

Question: How do I access my email?
How do I access my email via webmail, IMAP, or POP3/SMTP?

Solution: To access your email via webmail, go to http://webmail.lupinia.net, or go to /webmail/ from any domain hosted on this server (ie, http://hosting.lupinia.net/webmail/).  Login using your full username and password.

To access your email via POP3/SMTP, or IMAP, use the following settings:

    POP3/IMAP Server:  mail.lupinia.net (standard ports/settings)
    SMTP Server:  mail.lupinia.net (standard ports/settings)
    POP3/IMAP Username:  Same as webmail
    POP3/IMAP Password:  Same as webmail

The SMTP server requires authentication, just use the same settings as the POP3 server.  And, if you're using your own domain, we recommend using mail.lupinia.net for your mail servers instead of your own, for simplicity.

Question: What server-side scripting languages are supported?
What server-side scripting/programming languages are supported by Lupinia's server?

Solution: Our scripting offerings are fairly basic, we haven't yet had need for things like Cold Fusion or Perl.  However, we currently support PHP (version 5.2.5 as of this writing), ASP, and Microsoft's .NET framework (versions 2 and 3).  We're looking into adding support for Ruby On Rails in the future, but we haven't had much demand for it yet.

If you have special requirements for your project, contact us to discuss your specific needs.

Question: What database server(s) are available?
Which database servers are installed on Lupinia, and what versions are they?

Solution: Lupinia only has one database server available for community use, MySQL 5.0.45.  However, if your application is based on ASP/.NET and has not been adapted to use MySQL, you may use a Microsoft Access database, which does not require a server-side application.  We strongly discourage this method, but it is an option.

Microsoft SQL is not available at this time, nor to we plan to add support for it in the future.

Question: Why can't I use an AOL email address?
I tried to sign up for an account or use a contact form on a forum/website hosted by Lupinia, but it said AOL email addresses were disallowed.  Why is this?

Solution: For the last few years, AOL has had one of the most aggressive anti-spam policies of any major ISP or email provider.  It's also one of the most failure-prone, and has a very high rate of blocking legitimate email.

Even before we moved Lupinia to its new server, we had issues with their anti-spam system blocking mail from the entire server because of a single spam report, which was usually in error.  Their email interfaces make it very easy to mistakenly report a message as spam while deleting it, and many people don't think it makes a difference.  However, on AOL, reporting a message as spam automatically blocks the originating server from sending any email into AOL's system for 24 hours, unless that server is a major ISP like Yahoo or Comcast.  Needless to say, we're not that big.

Since the point of requiring your email address on the registration form is to make sure the account is owned by a real person, and in case you need to be contacted by the site's staff for some reason, it's important that we be able to reach you at the email address you specify.  And, because AOL is so trigger-happy to block entire servers, we can't allow the use of AOL email addresses on any forum or website hosted by Lupinia.

All sites hosted by Lupinia are expected to abide by this policy, but some don't.  If you do sign up with an AOL email account, and your forum/website account becomes unusable, it's because your account was generating an excessive number of bounced emails from their system.  If this does happen, simply contact the administrator of the site you're trying to access (or, submit a ticket through this system), and you will be asked to provide another email account with a different provider.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but it should be AOL apologizing to us over this.  This policy will remain in effect until AOL either goes out of business, or they decide to adjust their policies to be more compatible with private mail servers.

Due to the unified nature of their email system, this policy applies to aim.com and netscape.com email addresses as well as aol.com.

Apparently, email addresses at cs.com also pass through AOL's system, so they are also affected by this policy.
